Dog Walker, Dog Sitter or Drop-In Visits: Which Does Your Pet Need?
By Anissa · Walks for Lucy, Reston, VA
One question I get a lot is "What do I actually need?" Dog walker, dog sitter, pet sitter, drop-ins, house sitting… it can feel like a lot of words for the same thing. So here's how I think about it. It really all comes down to your pet and your days.
Dog walks
A walk is anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, usually in the middle of the day while you're at work. It's perfect for pups with lots of energy, young dogs who can't hold it all day, and anyone who comes home to a dog doing laps around the living room.
Drop-in visits
A drop-in is a shorter stop at your home for a potty break, food and water, any medicine, a little play and some cuddles. These are great for senior dogs, cats and small pets, and for dogs who mostly just need a friendly face to break up a long day.
Overnight dog sitting
This is where I stay the night at your home. Your dog gets to sleep in their own bed, keep their own routine, and have someone there at bedtime and first thing in the morning. It's the closest thing to you being home, and it's wonderful for anxious dogs, seniors and pets with medical needs who'd find a kennel stressful.
House sitting
For longer trips, I look after your pets and your home together. Mail, plants, lights, bins, and of course lots of love for your pets around the clock. (Yes, I'll keep your houseplants alive too!)
So which one?
If you're out for a workday, a midday walk or drop-in usually does the trick. Away for a night or a weekend? Cats and some easygoing dogs are fine with a few drop-ins a day, but most dogs are happier with someone staying over. For a week or more, overnights or house sitting mean nobody spends long, lonely nights on their own. And if your pet is on medication or recovering from surgery, let's talk it through together.
Not sure? That's what the meet & greet is for. Tell me about your pet, and we'll figure out what makes them happiest.
