How to Get Ready for a Pet Sitter: A Simple Checklist
By Anissa · Walks for Lucy, Reston, VA
A little preparation means your sitter can follow your pet's usual routine, and you can enjoy your trip. Here's a checklist I'd suggest.
Before the meet & greet
- Think about your pet's quirks: nervous around strangers, pulls on the leash, hides under the bed.
- Gather vaccine records and your vet's contact details.
Write down the routine
- Feeding times, amounts and any treats that are off limits.
- Medications: name, dose, time and how your pet takes them.
- Walk length, favorite route and any triggers (squirrels, other dogs, mail carriers).
- Litter, cage and tank cleaning schedules for cats and small pets.
Set up the house
- Leave food, a few spare days' worth in case plans change, and clean bowls.
- Show where leashes, waste bags, towels and cleaning supplies are kept.
- Share door and alarm details, and a neighbor or friend as a backup contact.
Emergency details
- Your phone number and the best way to reach you while away.
- Your vet and the nearest 24-hour emergency vet.
- Written permission for treatment up to an amount you're comfortable with.
Every new client at Walks for Lucy starts with a meet & greet at home, so your pets and I can get to know each other before the first visit. Request a visit whenever you're ready.
