Winter Walks: Cold, Salt and Paw Care for Dogs

By Anissa · Walks for Lucy, Reston, VA

Northern Virginia winters swing between mild and icy, and both can be hard on dogs. Here's what helps.

Wipe paws after every walk

Sidewalks, parking lots and driveways are often treated with de-icing salt and chemicals. They can irritate paws, and dogs lick them off. A damp cloth or wipe at the door takes ten seconds.

Check between the toes

Ice can ball up in fur between the pads. Trimming fur there and checking after walks helps, and dog booties work for dogs who will tolerate them.

Small, short-haired and senior dogs get cold faster

A coat or sweater makes a real difference for small breeds, thin-coated dogs and older dogs with stiff joints. Shorten the walk when it's very cold or windy.

Watch the ice

Slippery surfaces are especially hard on seniors and dogs with arthritis. Choose cleared routes and go slowly.

Keep antifreeze out of reach

Antifreeze is toxic to pets even in small amounts and tastes sweet. Wipe up spills and keep containers sealed.

Not up for a freezing walk, or away for the day? A short drop-in visit keeps your dog's routine steady and gives them a warm companion.
